Shop a serious sauna, grill, or massage chair across five retailers and you'll notice something: the price barely moves. That isn't collusion and it isn't laziness. It's a policy called MAP, and understanding it changes how you should shop.
What MAP is
MAP stands for Minimum Advertised Price. Many premium manufacturers set a floor on the price their authorized dealers may advertise. Every authorized dealer shows the same number because every authorized dealer has agreed to. It protects the brand from a race to the bottom, and it protects you from the dealer that wins that race by cutting the things you can't see.
So what's actually different between dealers?
If the price is fixed, the purchase is decided by everything around the price. Five things:
1. Whether the dealer is authorized at all
A price meaningfully below MAP usually means one of two things: the seller isn't authorized, or the unit is gray market — bought through a back channel, sometimes from a different country's distribution. Either way, the manufacturer's warranty is frequently void. The savings on day one are the warranty you don't have in year three.
2. Who handles the freight
A $5,000 piece arriving on a pallet is a logistics event. Does the dealer tell you how many crates, whether liftgate is included, and what to do when the driver is standing in your driveway? Or do they forward a tracking number and go quiet? (Here's how we handle it.)
3. What happens if it arrives damaged
Freight damage is real and it's insured — if the receipt is annotated before signing and the claim is filed promptly. A dealer that walks you through that before delivery is worth more than one that explains it after you've signed clean.
4. Whether you can change your mind
Some dealers transmit the order to the manufacturer the moment you pay. We hold every order for 24 hours before it goes anywhere. That window exists for the wrong address, the wrong size, or second thoughts about a 240V circuit.
5. Whether a person answers
Call the number on the site. Does someone pick up who can tell you the electrical requirement of the model you're looking at? At this price point that isn't a luxury; it's the product.
How to use this when you shop
- If prices match across sellers, stop comparing price. Compare the five things above.
- If one price is much lower, ask the manufacturer directly whether that seller is an authorized dealer. Manufacturers answer this question.
- Ask every dealer the same three questions: crate count, liftgate, and cancellation window. The answers tell you who you're dealing with.
